Therapies and Holistic Practices

Tom Jordan MA, Dip Shiatsu

I used to be an editor for a book publisher, but got into shiatsu through my interest in oriental martial arts, and haven't looked back. I have a passionate belief in the healing power of touch, and believe that Eastern medicine offers a coherent approach to the maintenance of health in areas that are often neglected in Western society. I trained at the European Shiatsu School in London, and have been a Course Liaison Tutor there, as well as teaching on a course for the On- Site Massage Training Institute. I am also currently studying for a degree in osteopathy at the British School of Osteopathy.

Shiatsu is a Japanese form of integrated bodywork that can be enormously relaxing and pleasurable.

Shiatsu is rooted in oriental medicine, and works to balance your body's energy as it flows in the twelve meridians of Traditional Chinese Medicine. Where acupuncture uses needles, Shiatsu uses intuitive and empathetic touch, stretches and mobilisations.

Generally, I will work on the whole body, choosing appropriate meridians to focus on, and tailoring my approach to suit you, so that each session is unique. The treatments aim to stimulate your body's ability to balance and heal itself. Often this is experienced as a sense of deep calm and relaxation, and you may feel increased energy once your body has had time to adjust.

While shiatsu can be very beneficial for purely physical problems, such as sports or dance injuries, it is a truly holistic therapy, taking full account of you as a whole person. An important principle is that mind, body and emotions are interlinked, as they are all varied manifestations of what is ultimately the same energy (Qi), and each can affect the others. Emotions can manifest themselves in the body in various ways, and working to release these manifestations can help to release the associated emotions. Equally, calming the mind or emotions can have a beneficial effect on many physical symptoms.

The session takes place on a futon on the floor, it lasts one hour, and you remain fully clothed. Wear loose, clean comfortable clothing, and avoid skirts or jeans. The room is quiet and calm, and I will take care to ensure you are comfortable throughout the treatment.

At the end of the session I may suggest an exercise or have other recommendations for you to take away with you, to allow you to support your own recovery or maintain your health.

It's fine to come as and when you feel like it just for relaxation and upkeep, or to relieve aches and pains, but if you come with a specific problem or condition you'd like help with, the number and frequency of subsequent visit will be discussed after the first treatment.
