Therapies and Holistic Practices
Katie Heller: Naturopath and Medical herbalist.
Naturopaths use a variety of techniques which all subscribe to the basic understanding of the body’s own innate intelligence, these include:
Bach Flower remedies
Homeopathy
Tissue salts
Nutrition
Detoxification
Iridology
Herbal Medicine
Traditional Chinese Medicine
Ayurvedic Medicine
Auricular Acupuncture
The Principles of Naturopathy include:
• There is a vital force or life force that given the right
• conditions will self-heal or self-correct.
• Prevention is preferable to cure.
• The root cause of dysfunction is identified and treated,
• not the branches.
• The whole person is treated (Physically, emotionally
• and spiritually).
• Health is much greater than just absence of infirmity.
• It should be abundant vitality.
• The person is treated NOT the disease.
• The individual is unique, each person responds in a
• different way.
What is Herbal Medicine?
Herbal medicine is the use of plant remedies in the treatment of disease. It is the oldest form of medicine known. Herbalism in the UK is now classed as an “alternative” or “complementary” discipline but it is still the most widely practised form of medicine worldwide with over 80% of the world’s population relying on herbs for health. The Herbalist’s Approach Medical Herbalists take a holistic approach to illness. The underlying cause of the problem is sought, and, once identified, it is that which is treated rather than the symptoms alone. This is because the treatment or suppression of symptoms will not rid the body of disease itself. Herbs help restore the balance of the body, enabling it to mobilise its own healing powers.
What can Herbal Medicine Treat?
Herbal Medicine can treat almost any condition that patients might take to their doctor such as:
• Skin problems (psoriasis, acne, eczema)
• Digestive disorders
• High blood pressure, angina
• PMT & menstrual problems
• Infertility & Menopausal problems
• Arthritis
• Insomnia
• Stress & other nervous disorders
• Migraine and headaches
• Allergies (hay fever, asthma)
• Flu, tonsillitis
I use a combination of Western, Ayurvedic and Chinese herbs and diagnostic tools
Integrative living
Integrated living is a multi faceted approach that works on the principle that we need to keep the different aspects of our lives in balance. It recognized that the mind, body, spirit are interconnected and that stresses and dis-ease within the body and energy system can create illness. If something is out of balance then symptoms will exist, it is the bodies way of telling us that it simply cannot cope.
In order to reach optimum health and vitality we need to look at the complete picture and treat holistically. Every person is different, and what works for one may not work for another. We therefore create an individual program that integrates an array of medicines and approaches to enable the most effective correction of imbalances at all levels.
We first identify the underlying cause, then create the optimum environment for healing to take place, giving the body the tools its needs to heal itself. By bringing about an increased level of consciousness and self-understanding within the patient and encouraging them to take responsibility of their health, the patient is then able to begin the process of self-healing. Once this happens, everything is possible.
About me
I have been a yoga teacher since 2001. It was when I discovered yoga that I finally became aware not only of the physical body, but the meta-physical. And so began my interest in holistic and conscious living. With the yoga permeating every aspect of my life, I decided to embark on a four-year study of Naturopathy and Medical herbalism at the College of Naturopathic Medicine in London.
I believe that it is one of my roles as a therapist is to educate and inspire people so that they understand where they are creating stresses in their lives and going out of balance and showing them manageable and realistic ways of making improvements.
Qualifications: Naturopath ND, Herbalist Dip. Herb.
The ANP (Association of Naturopathic Practitioners) recognizes the diploma in Naturopathy whereas the Herbal Training is recognized by the URHP (United Register of Herbal Practitioners). The URHP is a member of the EHPA (European Herbal Practitioners Association).
